Collins Bible Handbook
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (April, 1989)
Authors: Jacques Musset, Sarah Thomas, and Penny Stanley-Baker
Average review score:

Collins Bible Handbook is an excellent tool for teaching!
The Collins Bible Handbook is a wonderful way to introduce each book of the Bible. With summary text, pictures, and scripture, one open page gives the student a quick and precise over view of that Book. I first used it in 1990 while teaching an Old Testament class of 10th graders, and I still find the book valuable now that I am teaching middle school students.

Rich, seasoned commentary on history and modern times
This third volume of Huxley's complete essays will appeal to a college collection which already has the first two volumes and anticipates collecting the entire six: this volume covers 1930-35 and collects his observations of the social and political trends of those years. Important essays and articles provide rich, seasoned commentary on history and modern times.

Complete Celtic Fingerstyle Guitar
Published in Spiral-bound by MelBay Publications, Inc. (February, 2000)
Authors: Stefan Grossman, Duck Baker, and El McMeen
Average review score:

PICK - IN.
It's a book you can spend a lot of time on... It contains a lot of songs, each one with a different mood: beautiful melodic pieces, quick jigs to be danced, dramatik marches, and so on...

The CD is very helpful and pleasant to listen to, even if it does not contain all of the songs of the book.
The difficulty of the songs ranges from very easy to very difficult. And you'll also find out some beautiful tunings for the guitar: DADGAD, CGDGAD,...

If you like to play fingerpicking, it's a very good book, like all of the Grossman's publications.

The Concise Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians

The Concise Baker's
For those of us who can't afford the complete Baker'sBiographical Dictionary of Musicians, the Concise version is still agreat buy We have owned the 8th ed. for some years and use it very frequently. This dictionary has good clear information on not just the well known composers and performers, but many minor composers and performers as well. Like the complete ed., this dictionary includes jazz musicians. One of the best features of this book is that it not only has the biographical article, but has the composer's works divided up into the various types of composition, such as piano music, giving both titles and dates of compositon. A great reference tool, particularly for anyone wanting to find more pieces by a favorite composer, or a date for a piece already known. .

Cradle and All

Author: Nancy Baker Jacobs
Average review score:

Another terrific suspense novel from Nancy Baker Jacobs
CRADLE AND ALL is one of those books that you will literally hate to put down until the very last page.

As always, Ms. Jacobs makes her characters and predicaments so real that you will feel as if you are with Karin as she seeks to rescue her baby.

Be sure to read Ms. Jacobs's other fine novels, which include SEE MOMMY RUN and the three novels in the Devon MacDonald series.

The Cultural Heritage of Arabs, Islam, and the Middle East
Published in Paperback by Brown Books (29 April, 2003)
Author: William G. Baker
Average review score:

Not Just Another Book About Islam
This is not just another book about Islam. I found this book to be a hands-on practical guide to the real world of multi-cultural interaction between the West and the Middle East. It is a book for those who desire immediate guidance on, and knowledge of, Arab culture. The American author has had a unique life-long experience living and working in the Arab world. As a child, he was probably more native "Arab" in his upbringing than American. His experience gives him unique insight as to how the Westerner and the Middle Eastern Arab perceive each other. Without cultural sensitivity and a basic understanding of the Arab Middle East, misunderstandings will occur between cultures. The book gives wonderful examples of how seemingly simple interactions between Westerners and Middle Eastern Arabs can go wrong. The author describes elements of the cord of common identity of Middle Eastern Arabs. This includes discussions and examples of the language, the manner of emotional expression, the music, food, religion, humor, dress, the norms of public and private behavior, and of wrong and right. I recommend this book for all Westerners who seek to conduct business with Arabs in the Middle East. I also highly recommend it for all Foreign Service Officers and military academies. It is a wonderful book for university courses in sociology, international relations, and Middle Eastern studies. And, if you are an American who plans to travel and visit the Middle East, take time to read this book and become more culturally sensitive as to how to dress and behave appropriately. Also learn a few Arab expressions to try while visiting. Avoid the appearance of the "ugly American tourist" and enrich your life with the wonderful opportunities of being a good world neighbor!
